Columbus Trittico
Trittico is a new family of carbon fibre bicycle cockpit components from Columbus. The Italian steel manufacturer has designed the four-piece set with a focus on creating shapes that support handmade steel bicycle frames. Columbus’ Trittico range consists of handlebar, stem, seatpost, fork and bottle cage, and are characterised by “state-of-the-art” performance, a patent pending internal routing system on 1-⅛” headsets, and intuitive patent-pending micro-tuning characteristics.
Columbus developed the Futura Trefoil Carbon Road Fork with a patented steerer section that enables internal cable routing on 1-1/8" steerer diameters, making it easier to build a steel frame without needing to have an oversized head tube.
The stem has a proprietary tuning sleeve that has been developed internally by Columbus. This sleeve integrates with the traditional spacer, offering improved functionality in the form of three micro bike position tuning variants (-5°, 0, +5mm) that allow the user to perfect the fit of their bicycle. Bolts are hidden from view and a cold-forged aluminium front plate ensures connection with handlebars at a lighter weight.
Why integrate the cockpit?
Routing the hydraulic cabling inside the handlebar through the stem and into the frame shrinks the cockpit's frontal area, reducing drag on flat roads and climbs by up to 6% (the average gradient of a Tour de France climb is 6%). Reducing the busy cables also allows you to focus purely on the shapes and colour scheme of the bike.
The Frameset
Available in six standard sizes (46cm, 49cm, 52cm, 55cm, 58cm, 61cm), each frame is made from custom-drawn Columbus Spirit HSS triple-butted steel. We developed our tube shapes with Columbus to find the best balance of strength, stiffness and ride quality. For this special project we painted the frame in a one-off paint scheme. The sparkling, rich blue is achieved by painting the frame in a silver base paint with a light fleck and then applying a light layer of blue over the top. The result is a colour that subtly sparkles but with a rich depth of blue. Up front is a tapered head tube fitted with a Chris King InSet7 headset.
The Condor bird logo is brazed in stainless steel to the top tube and then highly polished. All the hoses and cables run inside the frame. We chose to use Shimano's Dura-Ace Di2 semi-wireless groupset to showcase the routing of the electronic cables inside the chainstays.
